North Korean Refugee English and Robotics Teacher

I participated in the Mercer on Mission trip to South Korea the summer of 2022. The goal of the trip was to teach North Korean refugees English and technical skills.  I was part of the level 2 English teaching and Logo Mindstorm robotics instruction teams.

Level 2 English

  • Teaching team of 4.

  • Class of 7 students.

  • Led 2 of 10 lessons.

  • Basic vocabulary and semantics of English to build a foundational understanding for conversational English.

Lego Mindstorm robotics

  • Responsible for 2 students

  • Taught basic physics and mechanics through the building of a rubber band and popsicle stick catapult.

  • Provided instruction and assistance in the building of the robot and use of software to code solutions for their robots to solve a series of challenges.

Challenges

  • Overcame language barrier by using body language and providing one-on-one assistance.

  • Kept students engaged by creating challenges for students to compete against each other.
